The first major of the season is coming up, with preliminary qualifying taking place at Thunderbowl tomorrow (Monday 31 Aug).

Norm Duke is hoping to win his third consecutive World Championship, and tie Jason Couch and Earl Anthony's record for defending major tournaments. Chris Barnes, Wes Malott, Jack Jurek, and Thomas Smallwood are coming off amazing runs at the World Series of Bowling (making match play in all 5 animal pattern tournaments, with Barnes making the cut at the Motor City Open as well). Walter Ray Williams is going for his fourth World Championship title this decade.

On my fantasy team, I have

Chris Barnes- the obvious choice (maybe except for Norm Duke)
Steve Jaros- an amazingly talented bowler that just needs to make more TV shows
Ryan Shafer- another extremely talented bowler that just needs to win on TV more (and also my personal favorite to watch)
Dino Castillo- One of the best bowlers not to have made a show.
Doug Kent- Does very well in majors

It's too bad that the tournament is limited to 120 entries this year.

That's just great, now they are messing with one of the majors too, I thought this prebowling garbage was just for the named pattern tournaments, this super sucks. When are the finals...January?

Don't you guys think it makes it anticlimactic to have the finals months after the actual tournament?

To me this kills the flow and excitement leading into the TV finals, and what ever advantage the leader had going in will surely not be there a month or two from now.

To be honest, I didn't and don't even go to the pba website anymore, I don't want to see any spoilers or ruin the tournament any more than they already have.

I agree. If they take any longer to put the events on TV, they might as well put them on ESPN Classic.

I wish that there was no separate WC for the women. Now they can't bowl the men's event anymore and perhaps make history.

Yeah, removing any momentum sucks since it'll limit the winners to the top few on the points list.

I'm going to try and get down there again this week. I went during the chameleon pattern tourney, watched Walter Ray bowl PDW. It was quite enjoyable.

It's my understanding that they're not waiting to bowl the final Stepp Ladder rounds. They're taping them so it won't be live when it goes on TV. I believe they start airing them in November.

The taping for all of the finals from the WSOB happens labor day weekend.

Looks like I'm wrong - the Men's World Championship final will be live in mid-December. Senior's and Women's is taped Saturday, and the rest of the shows (animal patterns, Motor City Open, etc.) will be taped this weekend as well. One has already been taped actually.

Yeah, well, at least they'll have a real tour starting in January. And, at least there seems to be only 1 less event this year (barring the cancellation of the Japan Cup).
